Anxiety and Your Dog

Since dogs are naturally pack animals, they're not used to being left alone. However, it's inevitable that you'll have to leave the house without your pup sometimes--and unfortunately, this can cause some dogs to exhibit upset or damaging behavior, such as:

• barking continuously
• whining, pacing, and otherwise nervous behavior
• destructive behavior towards himself or your property
• urinating or defecating in the house

To humans, it may look as though they're just being naughty, but in truth, they're anxious and depressed because they've been separated from their "pack": you and your family. Separation anxiety is such a problem that it is estimated to afflict 10% of dogs, and it is cited as one of the top reasons why dogs are given up or even euthanized.

But though it can cause serious problems, this anxiety is treatable, and most often stems from one or more of the following factors:

Lack of human leadership. If you often coddle your dog or don't lead them with a firm enough hand, they may see themselves as the pack leader instead of you. This causes them to feel responsible for you, and therefore makes them feel anguished when you leave. Make sure your dog sees you as the alpha. If your dog acts excited and hyper-attached when you return home, do not give excessive comfort. They will understand that as a reward for their panicked behavior, and they will take it as a sign that this is an okay way to act, which in turn perpetuates their anxiety.

Changes in routine. If you are suddenly unable to spend as much time with your dog as you did previously, this can cause a serious disruption in your dog's daily routine, and can cause them to feel anxious. To help ease the transition, practice goodbyes with them. Leave for a couple of minutes and come back in, ignoring them for a minute or so and then rewarding them. Gradually increase the time you stay away, and your dog will begin to get acclimated and their tension will lessen.

Not enough exercise. When a dog isn't given a proper amount of exercise, their energy builds up until they have no choice but to act out in order to release this energy. You can help this by taking regular walks together, making sure to keep your dog by your side instead of in front of you to reinforce that you are the leader of the pack.
