Diabetes in cats is quickly becoming common in the western world, and is directly caused by a deficiency of the hormone insulin, which is indirectly caused by a variety of diet and lifestyle factors.
It is estimated that diabetes may affect anywhere from 1 in 100 to 1 in 500 cats. Diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes to affect cats, and is similar to type II diabetes in humans. Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas starts malfunctioning, and the pancreas may stop making sufficient insulin. In addition, the body becomes resistant to accepting insulin in the cells.
