In the “lock and key” relationship required to bind insulin to the insulin receptor site, biologically active chromium (as Oxygen coordinated chromium nicotinate) is the “Key” and zinc is an essential component of the “lock”. Basically, biologically active chromium is the essential component to form Glucose Tolerance Factor that increases insulin’s sensitivity to and enables insulin binding with insulin receptors on the cell’s surface. This increased sensitivity reduces “insulin resistance” and promotes healthy glucose utilization, which enhances energy production and many other insulin dependent events.

Zinc is needed to fund zinc-dependent metalloproteases (enzymes) that are part of the insulin receptor site and involved in degrading insulin after glucose/protein delivery (Insulin Degrading Enzymes). So, Zinc assists in binding insulin and then degrading it to reduce undesirable insulin buildup…a bad thing. Research shows that zinc supplementation resulted in lower insulin levels without a concomitant increase in blood glucose levels (the insulin was more efficient).
