These simple homemade treats are a fun way to give your horse a wide array of nutrients. Simple to make, this recipe will easily adapt to variations. You could trade out the oats for another grain flour like buckwheat or add in your horse’s favorite herbs. Stir in shredded carrot, minced apple or banana for a different take and roll in more Equi-Chia, ground flax, powdered greens, or even crushed peppermint candies for a change in flavor or added nutrition. The sky’s the limit!
Mix dry ingredients including ground oats (grind regular oats in a coffee grinder), Equi-Chia, and dates in a bowl. Once thoroughly stirred, add molasses and blend on high. Line a plate or tray with parchment paper. Form into balls. (If you’d like to roll your treats in something, now would be the time.) Place them on your parchment as you go. Once all mix has been used, refrigerate for at least a half hour to set mixture. Will keep up to a week unrefrigerated in an air-tight container, for up to two weeks in the refrigerator, and indefinitely in the freezer. Makes aprox. 8 ping-pong sized treats.
According to a 2005 study, iron-rich fenugreek (aka methi) is most horses’ favorite flavor! A slightly sweet, nutty herb, described as tasting like a cross between celery and maple, fenugreek is common to Indian cuisine and is increasingly easy to find in well-stocked grocery stores. (You should also be able to find it in local Asian markets, or online.)
This Equi-Chia recipe combines fenugreek with another horse favorite discovered in that 2005 study – carrot. Using apple sauce and stevia as a sweetener, it’s an ideal, nutrient-packed AND delicious treat that’s even safe for diabetic horses.
Pre-heat oven to 350. Mix all ingredients except for apple sauce in a bowl. Once thoroughly mixed, stir in apple sauce. Line baking trays with parchment paper. Form cookies to your own size preference. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool. Will keep for a week unrefrigerated in an air-tight container, for up to two weeks in the refrigerator, and indefinitely in the freezer.

Equi-Chia is a blend of non-GMO black and white chia seeds grown using eco-friendly practices without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Equi-Chia is designed to supplement equine diets with omega 3, fiber, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants for support of healthy joints, skin, coat, digestion, blood sugar balance, and overall wellness.
The FDA does not “approve” animal supplements; however, Equi-Chia is made following FDA and Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines.
It is always best practice to consult with your vet before starting any new diet or exercise regimen, however, the blend of chia seeds in Equi-Chia are generally considered to be safe, and there are no known side-effects or interactions.
Equi-Chia can be offered straight from your hand, served as top-dressing with your horse’s standard diet, or used in homemade treats. Horses enjoy the flavor of Equi-Chia so there is no need to disguise it, and unlike some other seeds and grains, Equi-Chia requires no soaking or grinding prior to serving.
We recommend a dose be given once a day, however, your horse’s Equi-Chia dosage can be safely doubled as you begin the regimen or as desired.
Given the standard 2oz dosage, one container of Equi-Chia should last one horse about 47 days. If your horse is highly active, a large breed, or pregnant, given the daily 4oz dosage one container should last your horse about 24 days. For foals and miniature horses, given the 1oz daily dosage, Equi-Chia will last longer – about 95 days.
